A DIVING expert from Barrowford was set an underwater task with a difference when he helped solve a TV puzzle.

Aiden West, of Park Street, was hired as a safety consultant for tonight's episode of Science Shack when presenter Adam Hart-Davis attempts to live underwater without support from the surface.

Aiden, 39, has 17 years of diving experience and runs Osiris, a commercial diving business in Barrowford.

He gave advice to programme producers and, along with his 12-strong team of divers, provided extra underwater safety for the stunt, which will be screened tonight at 7.30pm.

A team from the programme makers Screenhouse created an underwater home in Helmsley, North Yorkshire, using two skips that were welded together and equipped with life support systems.

Aiden and his team, who usually work with engineering and construction companies, spent days giving health and safety advice to producers as well as giving safety back-up to people working underwater.

An extra diver was also on hand during the hours Adam Hart-Davis was carrying out the attempt, in case anything went wrong.

Aiden, who once worked with the makers of A Touch of Frost, said: "The TV work is definitely different from the work we usually do and it's thoroughly enjoyable.

"We have the skills to help with this type of project and we provided advice during the construction of the habitat.

"The divers and I also helped with the filming and provided an extra safety presence in the water in case anything went wrong.

"Many of the divers like the chance of appearing on television."

Science Shack producer Jon Doyle said: "Their commitment and professionalism during pre-production and throughout filming ensured the project was delivered on budget and on time."
