AN angry young man who attacked his sister was told to change his ways by magistrates.

Daniel Machin, 20, described to Burnley Magistrates as aggressive, immature and irresponsible, hit and kicked sister Kelly after a night out.

The defendant, of Dover Street, Nelson, admitted common assault, damage and breach of a conditional discharge. He was given 140 hours community punishment and ordered to pay £200 compensation.

Emma Kehoe, prosecuting, said Machin had been staying with the victim and her 20-month-old daughter. On August 15, she and her boyfriend went out for a drink and arranged to meet up with the defendant. They left a club just after 1am and Miss Machin's partner was not feeling well. She stayed with him while Machin made his way home.

When he got there, the defendant fell asleep outside and was lying on the pavement, and Miss Machin's boyfriend offered to carry him inside.

Mrs Kehoe said Machin woke up and was aggressive. They all went inside and he and his sister argued.

The defendant punched and broke a mirror and when asked to leave, lunged towards his sister and hit her in the face several times. She fell to the floor and he began to kick her.

Miss Machin was left with blood covering her face and the following morning was in pain.

Some days after, the victim found she had black eyes and a swollen nose. The defendant was arrested at a friend's house where there was a stand-off between he and a police officer. It took some time to arrest him as he was hiding in the cellar. The prosecutor added Machin had 12 previous convictions.

David Lawson, defending, said all parties had had a substantial amount to drink and the defendant had probably over stayed his welcome at his sister's house.

He added Machin hoped to rebuild his relationship with his sister, although he had not had contact with her since the assault.
