ALMOST 7,000 new jobs could be created if the controversial A5225 bypass is built.

Consultants said that if the road is constructed, the Leigh area could look forward to attracting "better quality employers" and increase the take-up of commercial land and premises.

DTZ PIEDA's report said the main bypass benefit had been viewed as easing traffic congestion, but the new report was a detailed study of its impact on jobs, regeneration and economic growth.

The bypass, they say, will also secure the development of Gibfield Park at Atherton and PPG land off Leigh Road at Hindley Green.

Council Leader Peter Smith said: "It is very likely the borough is set to continue to loose good quality manufacturing jobs which in the past have been replaced by low skill, often part time and usually low paid jobs.

"The A5225 is crucial to the economic future of the borough by providing attractive sites for development which will attract high quality investment. It will secure the development of brownfield and derelict sites."

Without the bypass he predicted "enormous pressure" for the release of greenfield sites next to major roads. The borough's economy is fragile following increasing job losses over the last 12 months."

Research shows 40,000 commuters travel outside the area to work, double the number who come in from outside.
