A 30MPH limit will be enforced on part of the A580 East Lancs Road while an innovative safety barrier is installed on a railway bridge as part of a £1.7million refurbishment.
Golborne railway bridge, which carries the A580 over the West coast main line, is being upgraded as part of a six month project to bring the bridge up to latest safety standards.
Work will start next Monday with off peak lanes closures to minimise disruption.
Two traffic lanes will be maintained in each direction during peak periods (07.00-09.30 and 15.30 - 19.00, Mon-Fri) with narrow lanes and a 30mph speed limit at all times.
Limited overnight closures of the road will also be required, restricted to Saturday/Sunday.
Highways Agency Project Manager David O'Neill, said: "Bridge parapets are being upgraded with a new type of barrier which has reduced the need for costly strengthening work."
