THE Blackburn and District CTC once again showed their dominance in the field of hill climbing by breaking yet another record at the weekend.
In the long-established Beard Cup Hill Climb Championship, which is disputed every year between the various sections of the Cyclists Touring Club, the Blackburn section set a new record by winning the coveted trophy for the 27th year overall beating Oldham CTC's previous best of 26.
The Beard Cup is presented to the best team of three riders from a CTC section although the fastest Blackburn rider this year, Dave Ebbrell of Hoghton, joined many illustrious names including the world famous Reg Harris for the individual title.
Ebbrell's winning time was 4mins 44.2secs and with team-mate Dave Collinge taking second place in 4m 59.7s and Chris Edmondson third in 5m 17.0s the Blackburn trio were unbeatable.
In addition to this, previous silver medallist in the National Hillclimb, Ian Stott, finished fifth on his touring bike in 6m 01.5s but Ian had already set a new club record of 1h 48m 23s in a 50 mile event in Yorkshire on the very same morning and then incredibly ridden over from that event to contest the hillclimb on this side of the Pennines in the afternoon.
Not to be outdone Ian's sister Tara won the prize for fastest junior, either male or female, with a ride of 9m 11.0s.
