STAN Ternent has insisted it would take a master magician to transform cash-strapped Burnley into a Premiership side at present.

Supporters have notoriously high expectation levels for their side after a meteoric rise up the league ladder under Ternent's expert tenure.

But the Clarets chief, who has already admitted to experiencing his most difficult summer at Turf Moor, believes the trick to taking the next step is to ride out the current financial maelstrom and survive in Division One.

He insisted: "Our aspirations are to stay in the first division. We want to take three points from every match, but to talk about victory (over Bradford) taking us up into a strong position in the league is ridiculous.

"We haven't got the money a lot of the sides have and I'm not David Nixon.

"The players are doing very well, but we can't have champagne tastes on beer money."

Ternent is ready to lay out the welcome mat for the return of two more familiar faces tomorrow.

Ex-keeper Marlon Beresford is back in town along with Nicky Summerbee, who was offered a deal following a recent Turf Moor trial.

Ternent said: "I would have liked Nicky to have stayed, but Bradford made him a better offer than I was able to and we wish him well.

"Marlon did well for us too and it will be nice to see him too. It's nothing personal, but I hope he doesn't have a blinder!"
