AN ANGRY mum is demanding action after the burnt-out house she and her four children used to live in has been turned into a dumping ground.

Ms Paulette Brooks says the Powell Street home she had lived in for eight years, which was destroyed by fire in June, is being used by children as a playground and by adults as a tip.

She said: "I moved next door because my house had been gutted by the fire. It is now just a shell. But the council has not even started to clean it up. It's disgusting. My burnt belongings are outside, which is upsetting. But not only that, it is a health and safety issue. Children make dens there, and they could easily get injured."

She said since the fire, which was caused by an electrical fault, people have been dumping household goods there.

"There is a fridge with food still in it and there are mattresses," she said. "The site attracts flies which come into my house and then there is the smell. It is disgusting. I am just so worried that we might even get rats," added the 33-year-old.

Despite contacting the council on a number of occasions, Ms Brooks says that nothing has been done and her daughter, Tania (14), refuses to move back in with her mother until the site is cleared.

Ms Brooks said: "It is upsetting for her to see her belongings outside. It's been two and a half months since the fire and it is not a big job to remove the rubbish. I can't understand why they haven't done anything about it."

A spokesman for Bury Council admitted that rubbish should have been cleared from the site earlier. He said: "The comments from this lady were justified and correct and we are taking all the steps that we need to in order to rectify the situation.

"We deeply regret any inconvenience caused."
