WHILE taking our excess rubbish to the tip this weekend, I couldn't help but think about last week's letter from council officer Mike Savage, defending the policy of binmen emptying rubbish out of non-closed bins on to the road.
I don't know where to begin!
Is a family of four (or more) expected to produce as little rubbish as a sole occupant with the same size bin?
How does picking rubbish out of a bin and putting it into the street instead of into the lorry reduce the possibility of council workmen from being hurt by hazardous materials?
Do we really want the streets of Bury to be covered in hazardous materials anyway?
How does a homeowner overfilling a bin on the morning of a collection cause more threat from pets and vermin getting to the rubbish than by leaving the excess on the road?
Do the bins expand each week, so that the excess from one week can fit in the next week's without causing overflow again?
Why was a council officer required to defend this policy rather than the executive member responsible for it?
I suggest that the best way of reducing excess rubbish from Bury is by throwing out the Labour council responsible for this policy at the elections next June.
