A THREE-YEAR jail sentence has been passed on a man who bit an attack victim's ear - leaving a piece hanging off - during a violent pub scene.

Dale Grimshaw, 26, was also said to have jumped on top of his victim and stuck a finger in his left eye.

Grimshaw of Woodbine Road, Burnley had been convicted by a trial jury of a charge of wounding with intent.

Mr Nick Courtney, prosecuting, said Ivan Smith had been out drinking with friends in the White Hart pub, Burnley where Grimshaw was also present with his fiancee. When last orders came, Mr Smith and his friends were merry, not drunk.

The prosecution said the disc jockey went towards the group and tried to talk to them. A friend of Mr Smith, believing he himself was about to be struck by the DJ, removed a glass from the man's hand and put it on the bar.

The DJ then hit that man, knocking him to the floor. At this stage Grimshaw got involved and bit into Mr Smith's ear. While he was on the floor Grimshaw jumped on top of him.

Mr Smith was again attacked by Grimshaw who put a finger into his left eye. After Grimshaw was arrested he claimed to have acted in self defence.

Mr Jacob Dyer, defending, said it had clearly been a very nasty, unpleasant offence, but was towards the lower end of the scale.
