CHAMPAGNE corks are popping at a picturesque Ribble Valley pub where Prince Andrew and Fergie are said to have courted.

The family-run Inn at Whitewell in the Trough of Bowland is the toast of the hotel trade after winning the Trophee Gosset Celebris, the most coveted wine award in Europe.

Only last month the inn was listed in the prestigious Good Hotel Guide 2004 and won a Cesar Award. It was one of only 14 UK establishments to be shortlisted for the award.

The winners were announced by Beatrice Cointreau, CEO of Champagne GOSSET, at an awards ceremony in London.
