AS a daily user of the M65, I was disgusted to see a mobile speed camera unit operating around 11am on September 15 slightly before the Accrington turn-off going towards Blackburn.
On looking at my speedometer after passing the bridge, I was doing a speed of approximately 82mph, admittedly over the speed limit, and assumed I was caught by the camera.
I find it incredible that the police complain about the lack of officers when it is obvious they are deploying them on these totally futile mobile cameras.
Fair enough, they may catch some people going at a silly speed. But for the rest of the commuters who drive sensibly and need to do so as part of their job, it is hardly fair that anyone going even 10 mph over the speed limit should be penalised the same as someone going 30 mph over it.
Doubtless, there are some people reading this thinking: "You were going over the speed limit -- you deserve it." But answer this: how many times have you gone over the speed limit yourself? Are you going to say: Never? Everyone goes over the speed at some point and it seems the police won't be happy until all cars are made to be restricted at 70 mph or all drivers are banned outright.
Needless to say, if I am penalised for going 10 mph over the speed limit, it really goes to show that the police have absolutely nothing better to do with their time, or are on a fundraiser for more speed cameras when they should be taking drugs and guns, the really dangerous thing, off our streets.
