FARMERS in East Lancashire are being offered training in a variety of skills to help them diversify and boost their incomes.
Northern Rural Training based at the Ribblesdale Centre in Lincoln Way,
Clitheroe, has been given £88,000 by the Department for the Environment, Fisheries and Rural Affairs to offer training in computing, sustainable technology, best environmental practice and running farm shops.
Carolyn Rowe, of Northern Rural Training, said: "We have an excellent track record when it comes to training and are delighted that DEFRA has enabled us to offer such a comprehensive range."
Nick Murphy, of Blackburn branch of the National Farmers' Union. He said: "It is a good thing. We did a survey of our farmers and were were surprised to find 80 per cent had a computer. Having one is one thing, but knowing how to use them is another matter.
"Farming has gone through a great change and, like any business, it has to evolve."
A Computers in Agriculture course offers basic and advanced help to up to 260 farmers and their families.
Environmental Farm Management looks at sustainable technology and offers advice on drafting environmental business plans.
Retailing Through Farmers' Markets is designed to help farmers add value to their produce by learning about the importance of marketing, butchering skills, employment law, animal welfare and health and safety.
