Clarets boss Stan Ternent knows how high the stakes are as his side take on Scunthorpe United at Glanford Park tonight.

A win at this second round stage could pave the way to financial rewards that would make the rest of the season somewhat more comfortable.

Last season's exploits brought Burnley bumper pay days with Tottenham Hotspur and then Manchester United providing Premiership opposition at Turf Moor.

But to earn the chance to experience those kind of monetary dividends - as well as the joy of ditching a top flight side out of the cup as they did Spurs - rests on the more down to earth matter of removing a side from the third division on their own track.

The Clarets know how they raised their game for last season's Premiership rivals - Ternent knows just how the Iron will raise their standards to meet the challenge of his Clarets.

"The potential for this to be a banana skin is massive," admitted Ternent.

"These matches will always pose potential problems. It is a big match for Scunthorpe and you can be sure they will have got their preparation dead right."

And it would not be the first time that the Clarets had hit problems at Glanford Park as they exited the FA Cup at the third round stage on penalties against the Iron back in January of 2001.

However, Ternent preferred to dwell on the positive.

"You can also say it is a good place for us as we won promotion there a few years ago," he said.

"What matters is that it is a decent pitch, a nice stadium and not too far for our fans who hopefully will travel to give us their backing.

"We know what we face and last season we had two tough matches against Blackpool and Huddersfield before we got through to play Tottenham and Manchester United.

"Scunthorpe United will be as tough again and we will have to work to earn a good draw."

But the benefits could be huge if the Clarets can negotiate this hurdle.

"If we get through and get a good draw like we did last season, then it will be great for the fans and help from the financial point of view as well.

"The cup run is not in the budget so anything we make is a bonus."
