A SUMMER festival procession is in danger of being scrapped if people fail to come forward and join in the fun.

Members of Lostock Hall Carnival committee say next year's parade might not go ahead if locals do not take part.

Now committee secretary Brian Quinn has threatened to step down from his festival post if people do not come forward and pledge their support.

He says the mounting costs of organising the procession as well as the disappointing turn out of just two floats at last year's event is running the 20-year-old event into the ground.

Schools, residents and businesses are being asked to participate in next year's event, to be held on the first Saturday in July, to ensure it a roaring success.

If the procession does hit the wall, it is likely the fun fair and one-day spectacle on the green, off Croston Road, will also be called off as the two have traditionally gone hand-in-hand.

Mr Quinn, who has been a member of the committee for five years, said the added expense of road bollards means it is no longer worthwhile if locals people do not get involved.

He said: "There may not be a parade next year. I may resign.

"If it wasn't for the children of St Gerard's primary school who turn up in fancy dress, then there wouldn't be a carnival.

"People say they don't want to lose it but if that's the case then take part.

"It's proving too costly. Last summer we were told to put barriers up by the police.

"It cost us about £500 for the barriers and we were lucky as we received donations, but there's no guarantee of that every year."
