WORKINGTON 10 TYLDESLEY 20: THE Ellis Sports Ground at Workington is etched in Rugby folklore as the place where the mighty All Blacks suffered their only every defeat to an English provincial side when the North West Counties recorded their famous win back in 1973.

Thirty years on and Tyldesley RU can now also lay claim to a famous win at the same ground. After being handed the furthest possible trip in the first round of the National Cup, Tyldesley made a poor start and were 5-0 down inside two minutes.

Undaunted Tyldesley regrouped and with the pack firing on all cylinders the dangerous Tyldesley backs pounced to score when Andrew Dickinson finished off a fine passing movement to level the scores.

Tyldesley began to dominate and with youngsters Ashley Worsfold and Mark Dickinson running the show in the midfield, Lee Cunliffe was able to get his pack to lay some good foundations to attack the Workington line.

At start of the second half Mark Dickinson was successful with a long range penalty but Workington regained the lead with a scrappy unconverted try.

Again Tyldesley regained the upper hand after the forwards drove deep and Worsfold had drawn the cover to allow Dickinson the simplest of tries under the posts. However a poor conversion attempt left Tyldesley just 13-10 ahead. With the clock ticking away Tyldesley made good yardage and a break by Cunliffe was supported by Pulman who made a dash for the line where the Workington defence stopped him in his tracks. The big back row forward had the presence of mind to turn and offload right into the rather sizeable hands of second rower Lee West who crashed over close to the corner flag.

All that was needed now was a conversion to put the icing on a very sweet cake and Worsfold duly obliged with a kick

Jonny Wilkinson would be proud of.

Some 100 miles south, Tyldesley Knights travelled to Southport Seconds for a league game. The Tyldesley side had a useful blend of youth and experience and they blasted their hosts apart with a comprehensive 50-0 win. Centre Adam Fetherston led the way with a hat-trick of tries and further scores came from Berrisford, Swanton, Hughes and Broadhurst. The win now puts Tyldesley into joint second place of the North West RU Second Division. On Saturday Wilmslow visit St George's Park.

Tyldesley Dragons met West Park and in a good old fashioned game of rugby the visitors ran out 12-0 winners. Biggest problem on the day for Tyldesley was how to keep their current 21 strong squad happy.
