A MODERN-day youth centre for Radcliffe is nearing completion.

The former Radcliffe Youth Club in Coronation Road has been closed for six months while refurbishments totalling £200,000 have been taking place.

Radcliffe area youth work manager, Tim Pyzniuk, said that when it opens in November it would be a "centre of excellence" for the young people of the town.

Mr Pyzniuk said: "In the past the youth club simply offered young people a place to socialise off the streets and a place where they could do award work such as the Duke of Edinburgh scheme.

"However, the new centre is going to have an extensive programme, will be open more hours and will be more of a young peoples' service centre. There will be music and multi-media opportunities as well as computer and Internet access.

"Among the professionals based there will be representatives of youth services and specialist organisations for young people who will offer advice and information on a whole range of issues affecting young people."

There will also be a number of physical improvements, including a new kitchen, an extra office and disabled facilities.

A big art project is also planned where a professional artist would work with youngsters on the internal decor of the centre.

A competition has been launched to name the centre.

Mr Pyzniuk said: "We are hoping it will be a focal point for the town's youth and give them a lot of educational opportunities they would not have got otherwise."
