TWO people died today in car accident on a notorious stretch of road between Belmont and Abbey Village.

Fire crews from Blackburn and Chorley and the incident support unit attended the scene on the A675 at 8.57am after the occupants were reported trapped when their car hit a tree.

The air ambulance and a surgical team from Royal Preston Hospital attended but the pair, who have not been identified, were pronounced dead at the scene.

Villagers last month called on motorists to cut their speed after there were five serious accidents on the stretch of road in a month.

Today's crash happened two miles south of Abbey Village, only 50 yards from the scene of the last accident a few weeks ago in which a car overturned.

Police have also appealed for drivers to slow down after ten people were injured in four separate accidents in just three days at the beginning of July.

The speed limit in on the road was reduced from 40mph to 30mph in 2002 as part of road improvements and the village has been earmarked as a potential speed camera site by the Lancashire Partnership for Road Safety.

Police have blamed many of the accidents in the blackspot on speeding.
