IT was back to the future for the Mayor of Bury when he launched "In Town Without My Car" day.
Councillor Wilf Davison led by example when he arrived in Market Square by pedi-cab, or modern rickshaw, and youngsters followed him with a ride in the environmentally-friendly mode of transport.
The mayor and the mayoress, Mrs Maureen Davison, are pictured in their rickshaw with taxi driver Dave Kennedy at the patrols.
Live radio broadcasts and entertainments ran alongside information stalls persuading people to leave their car at home on Monday (Sep 22) and either walk or take public transport to work instead. Transport bosses gave out free bus and train tickets to drivers who promised to do so.
Pilkington Cycles gave away three free bikes in a competition run with the road safety unit.
ln the under-10s category, eight-year-old Emily Deakin, of Cherry Avenue, Bury, won a BMX by coming first in a "spot the dangers" competition. In the 11-16 age group, Daniel Hayes (11), of Maudsley Street, Bury, was awarded a mountain bike for winning a cycle safety quiz.
In the adult section, Lynne Plumridge, of Canterbury Drive, Bury, won a mountain bike by answering questions about the current theory test.
