AN ACCOUNTANT with a relish for real ale and the great outdoors has combined the two in a book which adds up to the best of both worlds.

John Turner has produced a guide to ten circular walks in the Bury area, taking in the spectacular scenery of the West Pennines, while allowing thirsty walkers a jar of traditional beer at a dozen picturesque pubs.

The guide, A Walking Drinker or a Drinking Walker?, is available from Waterstones in Bury and at the central library for £3. All proceeds are going to the Summerseat Cheer Fund, which provides Christmas fare for local elderly, and the Speakeasy fund in Bury for stroke victims.

Mr Turner, a partner at Hollins-based accountants DTE, said: "It has taken me about three years to complete with some help from a friend, Graham Goodier.

"We are fortunate to have open countryside on our doorstep and a collection of pubs which, despite the constant advertising of lager and alcopops, continue to serve ale brewed by traditional methods. When combined, these two pastimes provide perfect relaxation and an escape from everyday life."

The walks vary in length from little more than three miles to ten miles. And the pubs visited include the Lord Nelson at Ringley, the Strawbury Duck at Entwistle, the Black Dog at Belmont, the Red Lion at Hawkshaw and the Pack Horse at Affetside. Some of the pubs stock the book which can be also be obtained from Mr Turner on 767 1271.

As for the author, he had such an enjoyable time compiling the guide that he has already started work on a follow-up.
