WHY, out of the whole of the borough, should Whitefield be denied a viable, competitive supermarket? Bury, Radcliffe, Prestwich, and even Pilsworth have them.
Does the council not care that people without their own transport (mothers with young children, the elderly, or the infirm) have to travel to these stores on a public transport system which doesn't cater for lots of shopping, or alternatively have to use expensive taxis?
The one thing that Whitefield doesn't need is more private dwellings. Almost all the recent development in the area has been of houses and flats. There is a project at Elms Square already providing some smaller shops.
I urge the residents of Whitefield to strongly oppose the council's preferred option of small shops and flats, by writing to their local councillor and demanding that the council go for the supermarket option that they appear to be rejecting.
As a resident of Whitefield, I would like to be given the same opportunities regarding shopping as the people of other towns, and not be dictated to by a council which is supposed to represent us.
W. HEYWOOD,
Kenmore Road,
Whitefield.
