STAFF at accident and emergency departments in Blackburn and Burnley have been praised for beating targets at their busiest time of year.

The Government target is that 90 per cent of patients are seen, treated and either discharged or admitted to hospital within four hours of their arrival at A&E.

In August, staff at Blackburn Royal Infirmary achieved 93 per cent and those at Burnley General Hospital 91.6 per cent. Both also recorded similar figures in July.

East Lancashire Hospitals Trust chairman Christine Kirk said: "The figures are absolutely tremendous for the time of year.

"It can be a very busy time with school and staff holidays but they rose to the challenge and deserve congratulating."
