FIREMEN were clearing up today after a massive blaze wrecked a recently refurbished pub on Saturday morning.

A passer-by raised the alarm after spotting flames and smoke pouring from the Waterside pub in Summerseat, Bury, at 2.40am.

The pub and restaurant, which re-opened this summer, was extensively damaged.

It took five fire crews and eight firemen equipped with breathing apparatus more than half an hour to bring the blaze under control.

It is thought that the fire started in a bin in the bar area of the pub.

The bar and ground floor of the building were badly damaged and smoke damage also affected an upstairs function room.

It is not being treated as suspected arson.
