A STUN gun was recovered and 14 people were arrested as part of an continuing crackdown on nightclubbers.

A cordon was set up near Monroe's Club, Wood Street, Great Harwood, on Saturday night as police attempted to stop and search people heading to the venue.

Officers searched 60 people and arrested people on suspicion of possession of an offensive weapon, a Taser stun gun, possession of controlled drugs and possession with intent to supply.

Two similar operations were run last December and January and resulted in 300 searches, the arrest of 17 people for drugs offences and the recovery of a knife, an axe and drugs.

Police said they were targeting people who used the club after complaints.

Today, Ian Jackson, owner of the club, said: "We will continue to co-operate with the police as long is it is carried out in a efficient and pleasant manner, which it was on Saturday.

"They say there were 16 arrests, but we had 300 customers, so it is not a great proportion.

"I heard that someone was arrested for having a spliff and someone else for a few pills. We don't allow those things in the club. We search people as they enter.

"This action is not affecting our trade, as people just get used to it and get on with it."

A police spokesman said: "We searched 60 people and arrested 14 for various offences, including the possession of an offensive weapon, possession of a controlled drug and possession with intent to supply."

Monroe's has no drinks licence and opens only from 11.30pm on Saturdays to 8am on Sundays.
