THOUSANDS Of workers from across the country, including employees from Rolls-Royce and BAE Systems were staging a huge demonstration outside the Labour Party conference today to call for the Government's help in halting manufacturing job losses.

The 2,500 workers -representing the jobs being lost from manufacturing jobs every week --were arriving in Bournemouth by plane, chartered trains and coaches. were planning a march, setting off shortly after Chancellor Gordon Brown delivers his speech to the conference.

Derek Simpson, General Secretary of Amicus, which organised the protest, said: "Thousands of manufacturing workers have travelled hundreds of miles today to deliver their message to the government in person -- you must act now if manufacturing is to survive.

"Governments in France and Germany fight tooth and nail to save their manufacturing jobs. Ours is sacrificing our industrial base to the supposed panacea of high and flexible employment but it's a ticking time bomb based on a false and dangerous premise."
