PADIHAM overcame what on paper was a tough North West Counties Football League Division Two Cup tie at Ashton Town on Saturday to progress into the next round of the competition with a 2-1 away win.

The home side had the better of the opening exchanges and were only prevented from taking the lead when Kirk Marsden tipped an Ashton Town shot onto the post.

After 15 minutes however, Padiham began to get to grips with the game and went close themselves with efforts from James Gill and Robert Johnson. Continued pressure by the Storks paid off in the 27th minute when a goalmouth scramble saw the ball eventually arrive at the feet of Robbie Sinclair and his shot found the back of the net from eight yards out to give Padiham a 1-0 half time lead.

In the second half John Harrison and Robbie Sinclair forced Ashton keeper Steve Dryden into early saves before Padiham took a 2-0 lead in the 58th minute and Harrison controlled a through ball and scored from just inside the box.

Ashton pulled one back 10 minutes later when a right-sided corner was flicked on for Steve Ellarby to volley in.
