Wirral 24 Leigh 1st XV 11
LEIGH opened the scoring when Bate broke in midfield and the ball was fed to Wilcock to chip ahead and re-gather for a try.
A penalty by Fisher gave them an 8-0 lead but the Wirral backs were beginning to stretch the Leigh defence, allowing their forwards a platform to drive over from a close-in lineout.
Leigh's continued reluctance to move the ball wide resulted in a congested midfield and a sequence of scrappy broken play saw them hanging on to a five point half-time lead.
From the re-start, a bout of indiscipline and a lack of organisation gifted Wirral possession from which they scored a simple converted try to take the lead. Fisher reduced the arrears to 12-11 points with a second penalty.
However, Leigh continued to produce an uncharacteristically lethargic display, kicking away their limited possession, allowing the Wirral backs to attack freely. It was no surprise when they scored another converted try and a comic-opera finish in which a loose ball could not be secured saw the score a final try.
Leigh 2nd 47 Rossendale 6
Leigh produced their best performance of the season to rip apart a well organised Rossendale side.
The home side immediately put the visitors on the back foot with surging runs from Hunt and King to set a platform for the backs to weave their magic. After 10 minutes Leigh opened the scoring with a well taken try from winger Culshaw.
Leigh extended their lead when Greenwood converted his own try after good work from Harrison. Rossendale would not lie down and where rewarded with a couple of penalties to reduce the deficit to 12-6. On the stroke of half time Leigh where to take the game by the scruff of the neck when Eccles timed his pass perfectly to send Harrison in for a try in the corner. Greenwood's successful conversion made the half time score 19-6.
Leigh knew that to win the game they would have to withstand extensive pressure from Rossendale early in the second half and they did this superbly. On their own line for 20 minutes Leigh would not give way with superb defence from Webster, Morgan and Travers.
Good work from half backs Brett and Eccles sent centre Greenwood in for his second try of the game which he converted himself. Harrison and Culshaw were soon to join Greenwood on a brace of tries when Harrison went half the length of the field and Culshaw pounced onto a mistake from his opposing winger. Both tries again were converted by Greenwood.
Leigh scored in the last minute when an astute kicking game by fly half Eccles was rewarded with Travers going in for a try. Greenwood converted.
Liverpool St Helens 20 Leigh 3rd 12
Leigh crashed to their first league defeat of the season against a much younger and fitter LSH side.
LSH started well, dominating the early stages of the match with Leigh struggling against the shear pace and agility of the LSH backs.
Inevitably LSH scored first but Leigh then rallied and deservedly equalised with Hutchinson crashing in out wide. LSH scored their second try. The conversion was successful and at half time Leigh were 12-5 down.
Again Leigh suffered heavily with injuries, losing players in key positions at half time. The second half started better for the Hawks, gaining territorial advantage and keeping possession well.
LSH scored directly from the loose ball after a collision and later converted a penalty. Leigh never gave up, and Krause offered the Hawks a glimmer of hope scoring late in the second half from a looping pass. Greenwood converted.
Leigh Colts 17 Waterloo Colts 10
Despite their lengthy injury list Leigh won a fine victory against senior opposition.
Leigh dominated the early stages and were rewarded with two tries from winger Tom Flannery for a 10-0 lead. The visitors however came back strongly to score tries either side of the interval to level the game as all tries went unconverted.
Leigh however regained control as Michael Eccles pinned the larger visitors back with some accurate kicking. After several missed chances the pressure finally told when Eccles sent Lee Pugsley in for the winning score with only minutes remaining.
Leigh U15s 36 Oldham U15s 19
Oldham came with a point to prove and strong forward play caused Leigh problems. Knapmaris powerful run gave Leigh the lead, but Oldham equalised. Cunningham then raced from half-way to score, again Oldham levelled.
Oldham's early second half pressure gave them the lead, but Leigh found their form and tries from Keefe, Hargreaves, Cunningham and Middleton-Adams and three conversions from Rushworth gave them a hard fought victory.
Leigh U14s 41 Oldham U14s 26
Leigh started well and opened the scoring after only four minutes with some slick handling from Sale and Parkinson which put Davies in for his first try, converted by Sale. Although Oldham scored soon after Leigh dominated the first half and extended their lead with tries from Lees and Roberts, Sale converting the second, to take a 19-5.
It was Oldham's turn to score early in the second half but this only inspired Leigh who replied with tries from Brown and Sale. Leighs dominance continued as forward pressure from Jordan and Poole led to Riley being stopped inches from the line, but he was able to off-load to Massey for a try, converted by Parkinson. Although Oldham scored due to a momentary lapse in discipline, Leigh finished as they had started with a try from Man of the Match Davies.
Manchester Tournament
Leigh U10s travelled to Grove Park for the Manchester Mini Festival and what a tough group they were put in. With each team beating each other it went to the final group game to see who progressed with Leigh just finishing top after losing to Manchester 5-0, beating Otley 20-10, beating Chester 10-0 and beating Ormskirk 15-5.
In the semi-final Leigh beat Widnes 25-5, before losing narrowly by 10-5 in the final against Manchester.
Leigh's overall Top Tackler was James Wilkinson and the Player of the Tournament was Sam Peet.
