TYLDESLEY Probus Club learned the history of Smithills Hall from speaker Clive Walsh.
He told members the first recorded owner in the 14th century was William de Radclyffe. In 1822 the Ainsworth family bought the hall for £21,000 and in 1937 Bolton Council paid £70,000 for the hall and its 2,112 acres of land. The stable block is now Smithills Coaching House.
