LEIGH Athletic progressed to the last 16 of the LFA Cup after making hard work of beating Collegiate 1-0.
After recent superb performances, Leigh started well but missed three excellent chances inside the first 10 minutes.
As the game progressed Leigh lost their way and allowed themselves to be dragged down to a poor standard of football on a poor surface. With only Gordon Spowart and Brendan Smith showing any form it was left to Chris Simm to steal the game in the closing minutes.
Leigh entertain top of the table Royton Town on Saturday where a much improved performance will be required by Steve Kidd's men.
The reserves beat Highfield 3-2 with goals from Tony Lewis and a brace from Jason Highton. The youth team collected three valuable points with a 2-0 win against Stand.
