Ashtonians ... 1

Bury Amateurs ... 4

A full strength Bury Amateurs ended a run of two successive defeats on Saturday with a convincing win at Haydock Park.

Bury started brightly and immediately forced the hosts on to the back foot. Smart interpassing and determined work from Stevens and Mapleston in the middle set the tone for the afternoon and it wasn't long before Bury were creating chances.

A long ball sent Subachus through but he could only fire wide after rounding the keeper. Tony Jackson came close following great work on the edge of the box and Gary Edwards was causing all kinds of problems.

It wasn't long then before Bury took the lead through the most unlikely source. A Bury corner was only half cleared and from fully 30 yards Steve Stewart blasted home with a superbly executed bicycle kick.

Bury continued to press menacingly and scored a second shortly after, Tony Subachus heading in following great work from Stevens down the left. With half time approaching Bury grabbed a deserved third.

Following intense pressure the Ashtonian defence could only put through their own net in a desperate attempt to clear the ball. The second half proved to be a much closer contest but it was Bury who managed to grab the fourth and effectively kill off the game.

Great work followed by an excellent pass from substitute Skelley set up Subachus who finished neatly from six yards. Although Bury conceded from a corner late on this was a performance built on a solid defensive display and the back three of Channon, Gibbons and Popplewell were excellent.
