BURY GSOB...0 XAVERIANS...6: THE unbeaten leaders of the Liverpool Zingari League had little difficulty in cruising past a poor Old Boys' side, who will be bitterly disappointed by the lacklustre display in this second round tie.
The visitors never looked back after grabbing a fourth minute lead with a simple, unchallenged header from a left-wing cross. It was a wonder that they had to wait a further 20 minutes to double their lead when Bury were undone down their left flank.
The home side struggled to retain possession as the Liverpool side kept them on the back foot with their energetic, purposeful play, and Holt often found himself isolated up front as Bury failed to support from midfield. They appeared to then enjoy a period of relative calm, with Ian Brown looking lively down the right side, but then a careless loss of possession punished them again in the 35th minute.
An audacious chip beyond Crompton in the last minute of the half then gave Xaverian an unassailable four-goal lead at the break, leaving Bury to try to salvage some pride from the second half.
Regrettably, they were unable to do this and the visitors played well within themselves, comfortably holding on to their lead as Bury sought unsuccessfully to exert any pressure on their defensive ranks.
Two further goals in the later stage of the game rounded off the scoring for the visiting team, leaving Bury without a goal for the first time in a game this season, and reflecting on a display which will leave several concerns as they prepare for the visit of reigning champions, Rossendale at Buckley Wells tomorrow, kick-off 2.30pm.
Goals from Ryan Harper and Jim Walmsley enabled the second team to come from behind and edge the local derby with Walshaw by 2-1.
The A team picked won 2-1 at Bolton Wyresdale.
The B team were beaten for the first time, losing to Gregorians by the same margin.
