BURY-Pedal Sport notched up a fine double victory over Leicester in the final home matches of the Midland/North Regional League season.
For the second team combination league match, Bury tracked four of the "summer fun" recruits in the eight-man team.
Steve Mann and Tom Doyle registered maximum scores of 12 each, Scott Jarman added 10, plus one bonus point, Dave O'Callaghan scored 6+2, and the newcomers' performances contributed to a solid team show -- Ashley Simpson took 7, Will Collins 6+1, Michael Parrish 6 and Chris Parrish 3.
Bury were always in control, leading 51-39 after heat nine but two late Leicester 7.3s reduced the margin to a still-satisfactory 62-58 win.
The first-team match was close all the way, and at 73-73 with three heats to go, Bury had two outside starts to come and it seemed to favour Leicester.
A 5-5 in the 16th, Bury looked for a heat points win in the penultimate heat.
Disaster seemed to have struck, however, when Paul Dyson was excluded for bringing down his opponent.
Despite Ben Scranage winning the heat, a 5-4 defeat seemed to have lost it for Bury.
No one told Steve Muff and skipper Neil Howarth, who raced to a brilliant first and second from the outside starts for a final score of 89-85, and a shock win for the Bury team.
Neil Howarth scored 17+1, Ben Scranage 17, Fred Rothwell 16, Steve Muff 12+1, Scott Jarman 10, Paul Dyson 9+1, John Whiting 6 and Steve Mann 2.
This weekend sees the last fixture, at Wednesfield on Sunday, but before that there is a big day at Goshen on Saturday.
The re-arranged Northern Alliance Junior Individuals start at 12pm with the under-13s, followed by the under-16s at 1.30pm, then the under-19s at 3pm.
The final event of the day will start at 4pm with the annual Chairman's Cup, sponsored by the Duke William pub, Ainsworth Road, Ainsworth, Bury.
This is a second-team level individual event, and a good line-up has been attracted from several north and Midlands clubs.
