REFERRING to the report (LET, September 3) relating to Burnley BNP men Steve Smith and Simon Bennett -- or should I say ex-BNP men?, they apparently intend to write a book, which Mr Smith claims "will be a blueprint for nationalists everywhere to achieve the same success."
Success? Their interpretation of success differs somewhat from mine. The election of councillors could be construed as a success by any political party and, sadly, for some, that is where their interpretation ends.
However, in my opinion, the success depends upon who those councillors are and their actions while serving on the council.
Their success will be measured by their ability, or at least their efforts, during their time as councillors.
To have an elected councillor who after a short time resigns his position, leaving stains in his wake, is to me a failure, rather than a success. To leave the party under the circumstances in which Mr Smith also resigned, throwing insults at the leadership, can also be seen as a failure.
To be successful, our elected councillors must bring about the changes that they believe are for the common good of the people they are supposed to serve. Merely attending 'most' of their council meetings is, quite frankly, not good enough.
As a group, the Burnley BNP councillors are theoretically, politically enabled. As such we would therefore expect to see at the very least, some genuine effort made in the way of bringing about those changes to which they subscribe.
Sitting and observing, as group leader, Len Starr has excused their actions, is not really what they are expected to be doing.
