A SUCCESSFUL season for a Tottington Cricket club has been marred by vandals.

The vandals, believed to be teenagers, having been running amok in the grounds of St John's Cricket Club in Beryl Avenue. They have ripped off part of the club roof and destroyed the garage door of the equipment storeroom.

Cricket secretary Clive Brooks said: "Fortunately because it was at the end of the season most of the equipment had gone in for servicing so all that was stolen was bits and pieces. But the cost of replacing the stolen equipment and the repairs will run into hundreds of pounds."

Now the club is urging local residents to contact the police if they see vandals in the grounds.

Kieran Coe, club development officer, said: "Things were just starting to come together for the club. The first team had won two trophies this season including the Calverley Cup.

"In addition to that improvements had been made to the clubhouse and ground facilities. However things will be put right before the start of the new season."

Mr Brooks added: "It is the nearby residents I feel sorry for. Youths have been coming down to the club at 2am. They have been taking drugs, drinking underage and making a general nuisance of themselves."

The club will now discuss ways of improving security in the grounds.

Mr Brooks concluded: "We would appreciate the help of anyone who can assist the club by providing materials for repairs." Anyone wanting to help should ring 0161 836 3417 .
