A MAN just released from prison after serving time for house-breaking today said he now understood how his victims felt after his flat was burgled and trashed.
The 31-year-old man, who vows he is reformed, returned to Swift Close, Brookhouse, Blackburn, after his first day at work as a gas engineer on Monday and discovered he had become a victim.
His television, iron, CD player and CDs had been stolen, offensive graffiti had been scratched into the wallpaper and through the plaster of almost every room and green paint had been poured over his furniture.
Abdulla Housing Association provides the flat. It appears that the burglar was targeting a previous tenant as the name Craig was mentioned in the scrawls.
The man, who did not want his identity revealing for fear of reprisals, said: "When I came home and saw the mess I felt physically sick.
"I was with a lady from the housing association and she said I went bright red. I could feel myself boiling.
"To be the victim now, I understand what my victims had gone through over the years. It has been devastating.
"I am earning a proper, honest wage and came home to that. I would never have done this to someone's house. It will take an age to clear up and the money it will cost is unbelievable.
"I am a bit worried that the people may come back and I am trying to get a new house. My neighbours will tell you that I have been spending all my time on the doorstep because I can't bear to be in the house now."
The man was released from prison at the end of August. He said: "I have another a chance in life and I am trying to grab it with both hands.
"I am an ex-offender trying to make a fresh start. I have got a job and have turned my back on my previous lifestyle. I have never had a chance like this to make a go of it.
"This burglary hasn't deterred me from that."
Abdulla Housing has put mesh over the windows for extra security.
DS Ian Critchley, of Blackburn CID, said: "The burglar climbed through a window and sprawled various graffiti on the walls and poured paint over furniture. We would like anyone with information to come forward."
