BLACKBURN Euro MP Chris Davies has welcomed the European Parliament's backing to proposals for industries to use more environmentally-friendly paints and varnishes.
He said that DIY in Blackburn should become a lot less smelly and more environmentally sound after the new European law passed another hurdle in Brussels this week.
Solvent-based paints contain organic compounds that are major contributors towards ozone pollution.
The gas can cause severe respiratory problems such as asthma, as well as damaging forests and crops.
Mr Davies said that paint manufacturers have already started to reduce their use of solvents and water-based paints are becoming more common, but he agreed that tougher targets should be set.
He said: "This will help speed up the changes that are already taking place. The new law will ensure that every coat of paint applied by DIY enthusiasts is healthier for them and better for the environment."
