HUNDREDS of youngsters got their skates on for the launch of Burnley's £235,000 new skate park.

The initiative, aimed at keeping skaters out of the town centre, where they have been causing problems for shoppers, was opened in Burnley's Queen's Park on Sunday.

A programme of events including a display of professional skate boarding, music and prize giveaways saw enthusiasts from across the country attending the event.

Skateboarders, BMX bikers and in-line skaters will all be able to use the purpose built site which includes specially-constructed ramps, grindrails and driveways.

It was developed as part of the Teenzone project, a scheme funded by European cash to provide facilities for youngsters.

Burnley Borough Council secured funding from government grants for the work and chose the site after 250 youngsters in the town were consulted.

A further bid for European cash for CCTV for the project is being considered.

Simon Goff, the council's parks services manager said: "The new skatepark is part of the Teenzone project and was developed in response to the need to improve recreation facilities for teenagers. It has been designed by a specialist skatepark designer following consultation with local skaters and the four refurbished tennis courts will be among the best in town."

Matthew Edwards, 19, who lives in Surrey, came especially for the launch. He said: "It's always good when a new skate park opens. I like to compare them with others and this is one of the better ones I have been to.

"I have family that live in Burnley and know that there wasn't anywhere for them to skate previously. They had to do to the town centre which wasn't ideal for anybody."

The proposals for the new skate park, along with refurbished tennis courts, were given the thumbs up earlier this year after traders in the town centre complained about skaters using the band stand.
