MANAGER Nigel Coates celebrated his Division Two Manager of the Month Award by recording win number five to take Colne into round two of the League Cup.

Colne started brightly and put the visitors under pressure from the kick-off. Scott Gizon went close with a header before Carl Howarth pulled a ball back to James Webster, who went past two defenders before sending a fierce shot just over the bar.

The Reds continued to press forward and it came as no surprise when a cross from Lee Slater found Paul Walker, who gave Colne the lead.

Young Chris Brennan in the home goal had little to do in the first half but dealt competently with any Town threat.

On 40 minutes the Reds made it two when a ball was played into Howarth inside the box who turned and slotted past the keeper.

The second half started with a shock when Town reduced the arrears on 55 minutes, but Colne's back four, marshalled by the excellent Craig Whitaker, hung on.

However, there was a late scare when Gizon conceded a free kick just outside the box and the crossbar came to Colne's rescue.

Coates was pleased to go through and keep the run going, but not happy with the second half display.

He said: "We were poor in the second half and allowed them back in. We have done this in a few games and it is something we need to sort quickly or we will be punished.

"There are one or two with knocks from today and captain Gary Rishton has had a set back in his recovery and is doubtful for Formby on Saturday."

Colne go to Flixton in the next round of the Challenge Cup.
