CONTROVERSIAL plans to build a wind farm at Scout Moor will go before Bury Council's planning committee on Tuesday night..
United Utilities Green Energy Limited and Peel Investments (North) Limited have submitted an application to the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) for the farm.
Although it would be located outside the Bury boundary, on the moors east of Edenfield, the council's planning committee can submit comments via Rossendale or Rochdale councils or direct to the DTI.
The 26 wind turbines would be 60 metres high with a three-bladed rotor, measuring 80 metres in diameter. Some fear that the scale and prominent location of the development could affect the visual landscape of various parts of the borough.
It has been recommended that the committee agrees to the following three options:
To object to the building of the 26 turbines as they would have a negative impact on the visual amenity of Ramsbottom, Tottington, Burrs, Bury and Whitefield.
To encourage the building of wind farms at off-shore locations, rather than as part of the landscape.
To continue supporting reductions in energy consumption and improving energy efficiency.
It is estimated that if built, the turbines would generate enough electricity for 51,108 homes each year.
