A MAN was cut free from his car late last night after crashing into a wall in Dunnockshaw.

Fire crews, police and paramedics were at the scene after the accident happened at around 11.40pm in Burnley Road.

Fire crews used cutting equipment to remove the driver and passenger doors from the Fiat Brava.

Leading Firefighter Anthony Harrison said: "It seems that the driver lost control and has gone into the side wall. It was worse than a head on collision because there weren't any side airbags. He was slipping in and out of consciousness as we worked for around half an hour to free him.

"He had suffered quite bad injuries to his arm, neck and back. We had to cut both doors off so that we could get the long-board into the car."

He added: "There has been quite a lot of traffic accidents over the past couple of days which has been due to the change in weather. We have had a dry year so when it starts to rain, oil on the road creates a film and makes it easy for vehicles to lose control."

The driver was taken to Burnley General Hospital to be treated for his injuries.
