I AM a fortunate driver who has not yet been caught out by the speed cameras because I travel on the same route each day between Blackburn and Bolton and I know where these 'revenue raisers' are sited, I simply slow down when approaching and speed up at the end of the marker lines.
However, my sympathy goes out to people like sales representatives who don't know the route, as their livelihoods can be at stake for doing a couple of miles an hour above the speed limit.
In my professional capacity, I recently met two police officers who also don't agree with the system. They both informed me that in addition to their normal duties, they are targeted with performance indicators, which means they are targeted in catching traffic-light dodgers, speed merchants, drunk drivers, etc.
I travelled to Bolton on the A675 through Abbey Village the other day and passed an accident. It later transpired that two people had died. I also regularly travel on the A666 Darwen to Bolton road. There is a sign just past the Darwen Cemetery saying: 'Warning, 81 accidents in the last five years.'
These two roads, along with the Blackburn-Haslingden Grane Road, must be the three most dangerous roads in Lancashire. Where are the speed cameras? Nowhere to be seen.
