BLACKBURN Rovers' two Academy sides bounced back from a couple of indifferent displays to record excellent results at the weekend.

Rob Kelly's Under 19s gained a valuable point against table-topping Manchester City while Ian Miller's Under 17s succeeded where the first team failed by beating Leeds United 3-2 at Brockhall.

Although the Under 19 game finished 0-0, Rovers carved out enough clear-cut chances on the day to have returned to Brockhall with maximum points.

But team boss Kelly was still delighted with his side's overall performance.

"City is always a difficult place to go to, but I am delighted with the way we competed.

"Keeping a clean sheet is good, it's always a great base to work from. It was a decent enough performance and with a bit more care and quality in the last third we might have come home with all three points."

In the Under 17 game, prolific striker Joe Garner got his name on the scoresheet for the seventh time this season by firing Rovers into an early lead.

Strike-partner Keith Barker then doubled the home side's advantage before Joel Byrom passed up the chance to make it 3-0 by missing a first half penalty.

Leeds got themselves back into the game when they pulled a goal back shortly after the restart.

However, Byrom then atoned for his penalty miss by drilling home a 25 yard free kick to make the score 3-1.

Leeds set up a tense finale when they pulled a further goal back in the closing stages but Rovers' defence held firm to claim all three points.

Team boss Ian Miller said: "Our first half performance was very good. After that, I thought we were always in charge without being over convincing. We are delighted to win, though."
