BURNLEY school leavers are being encouraged to have a creative approach to choosing a career.

Students can try on a fire suit, practice resuscitation on a doll, build a wall and record their impressions on video at a careers advice day tomorrow.

The Choice is Yours event is being organised by Burnley Information Providers - a group of employers, advice and community organisations, who give young people and their parents support in making decisions about life after school.

Ajay Sethi, a convention organiser, said: "Making a decision about adult life at 15 or 16 can be difficult.

"Our aim is to make youngsters aware of the range of opportunities that are available to them, whether they are considering work or further learning."

Six high schools are participating in the convention. Employer, education and training representatives will be available to attract the interest of the young people with hands-on activities, information and guidance.

Organisations attending the event include Burnley College, Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service, Rolls-Royce, Accrington & Rossendale College and the NHS.

Parents and school leavers are invited to Barden High School, Heald Road, Burnley, at any time between 9.30am and 3pm tomorrow to discuss career choices that best use their skills, knowledge and interests.

Convention organisers can also support parents who are more comfortable discussing their children's future in Urdu, Punjabi or Bengali.

Janet Benson of Connexions, who provide career advice for school leavers, added: "We can make young people aware of their options. After that we have to say to them 'The Choice is Yours."
