A JUNIOR football club set up to tackle juvenile nuisance has been named the town's BBC Community Club of the Year.

Revidge Community Association Saints was created a few years ago to keep youngsters off the street.

It has a boys' team of around 25 seven to 11-year-olds and a girls' team of ten seven to 12 year-olds.

It was selected as the winner of the Blackburn community club section of the county-wide competition.

Co-founder Trish Ferrarin, a coach and chairwoman of the community association, said: "Our secretary Judy Smith has been trying to get funding for pitches for about three years and now we have been acknowledged by Sport England, which runs this competition, we feel we have more clout to go back to people to say we are doing something positive in the community.

"It all started when we called an open meeting because of the hassle from youngsters in new Bank Road and playing in St Silas school yard. We started the community association at the same time.

"I trained as a coach to give them something to do because there are no facilities for them in this area. It has all been really positive."

The club meets every Saturday and during the school holidays youngsters take part in football competitions every morning.
