LANCASHIRE'S fire authority has been given a major cash injection in the fight to keep people safe in their homes.

Fire crews in East Lancashire will see their share of the £91,000 filter down to the coffers over the next three years.

The money is part of a £4.5million Government initiative to increase fire prevention and cut the number of accidental fires in homes.

The Community Fire Safety Innovation Fund will focus on the most vulnerable people in society.

Fire safety minister Phil Hope said: "The risk of being killed or injured in a fire does depend on where a person lives. Through the CFS Innovation Fund we will focus resources on those areas suffering the highest number of fire fatalities."

The additional funds will be used for more Home Fire Risk Assessments when brigades visit households to check fire risks and offer advice.

Community Fire Safety initiatives will also be encouraged to see more stations being open for public visitors.

And new schemes will also be encouraged by the Fire Service to trial and develop new ideas to tackle fire safety.
