I WONDER how many people realise that if Britain signs up to the proposed European Constitution this will endanger ownership of many popular breeds of dogs?
Not only mastiffs, rotweilers, dobermans, etc, but also alsatians, sheepdogs, golden retrievers and other well-loved breeds.
The European Union Commissioners seek harmonisation of laws across all member countries. Germany, the prime mover in this campaign, has already made two attempts to get severe anti-dog legislation passed in Brussels.
In some German states all dogs over 15 inches in height must undergo so-called 'character tests' every two years. The proposed harmonisation of laws would give the right to enter homes and confiscate dogs at will.
We should stop asking for a referendum on this issue, but rather demand one! If necessary we should withdraw from the European super-state completely and seek closer economic, social and political ties with our old and trusted allies.
