FIREFIGHTERS are stalwarts of our community and they deserve more recognition, says Bury MP David Chaytor.
The Labour backbencher, who visited Bury fire station during the long pay dispute, paid a return trip to listen to the firefighters' concerns.
"Many are feeling battered and bruised by the dispute which is understandable," he said. "There's still some uncertainty about the impact of the settlement on their incomes and working conditions. It's important that this is lifted as soon as possible so they can face the future with confidence."
" I think the fire service and community needs to recognise the huge contribution they make to our safety and security.
"My message to senior management is to keep them informed and treat them carefully. It was an unpleasant dispute, with things said on either side.
"While it was a reasonable settlement, it could and should have been better. We've got to build now and make sure there's a secure future for them, and that we maintain this first-class service."
