A COUNCILLOR was arrested along with three other men after an incident in the street during which his car was damaged.

The rear and side window of Coun Robin Evans' blue Mondeo estate were smashed, shattering glass across Burnley Road, Blackburn, at 3pm yesterday.

A PC on foot patrol is understood to have seen the incident and called for assistance.

The former BNP councillor, who now represents Mill Hill as an independent, was arrested yards from the traffic light junction with Accrington Road.

Three Asian men were also arrested and all four were taken to Greenbank police station for questioning before being released on bail.

Coun Evans' car remained in the street, guarded by a police officer until the early evening.

Detective Chief Inspector Neil Smith said: "Three Asian men and a white man were arrested and were questioned by police until late last night.

"They were all released on police bail pending further inquiries."

Coun Evans, who was living in Darwen at the time, won the Mill Hill by-election on Blackburn with Darwen Council last November. He became the only BNP councillor on the council.

The councillor, now of Colne Road, Burnley, quit the far-right party last month because of "organisational differences."

His car is decorated with Union Jack flags in the rear passenger windows and bunting. Today he said: "There were a couple of witnesses, who I hope will be helping with the inquiry."
