FIRE crews were called out to a scrapyard in Darwen after reports that electrical transformers had been thrown on to a bonfire.

Officers from Darwen fire station, together with a representative from the Environment Agency, attended the fire at Barnes Scrap Yard, in Cross Street, just before 6.30 last night.

It was established that several transformers were on the fire and advice from the Environment Agency indicated there could have been a possible release of potentially hazardous materials in the smoke plume.

Several hours of investigation revealed that the equipment was free of such toxins.

Assistant Divisional Officer for Lancashire Fire and Rescue Dave Bent, said: "The Fire Service reminds members of the public and businesses that the burning of waste materials is a specialist process and should be carried out with permission from the local Environmental Health Department."
