A 13-year-old schoolboy was struck on the head with a weapon as he tried to stop a car-jacker stealing his mother's car in Bury.

The robber walked up to the 45 year-old woman as she pulled into the driveway of her home in Mile Lane with her son at around 5pm on Tuesday evening.

As they got out, the man demanded the car keys and grabbed the woman by the arm. Police say her son intervened and was hit over the head with an unknown weapon.

He did not require hospital treatment.

The woman handed the robber her keys and he escaped in her blue Volkswagon Golf V6. The vehicle is still missing. The robber is described as white, aged in his early 20s with short brown unkempt hair, of slim build and around 5ft 9ins tall. He was wearing a dark jacket and trousers.

Det Con Tony Hough, Bury Police's Robbery Unit, said: "This was a terrifying experience for the victims and we would urge anyone with information to contact us."
