AN exhibition to celebrate Islam Awareness Week has been on display in the foyer of Bury Town Hall.

It was opened on Monday (Nov 3) by the Mayor of Bury, Councillor Wilf Davison, and can be seen today (Friday Nov 7) during office hours.

The exhibition has been organised by community groups, including ADAB, Bury Asian Women's Centre, Bury Racial Equality Council, Jinnah Centre, Route 99, Islamic Cultural Association, in partnership with Bury Council, Bury College and Greater Manchester Police.

A separate mobile exhibition has also taken to the road and will visit Athenaeum House in Bury today, Bury library tomorrow (Sat Nov 8) and Castle Leisure Centre on Sunday (Nov 9).

Islam Awareness Week has been running for eight years but it is the first time that Bury Council has joined the celebrations. This year's event runs until Sunday (Nov 9) and coincides with Ramadan, the annual period of religious fasting in the Muslim calendar.

Nasreen Ashraf, chairman of Bury Asian Women's Centre, said: "We are pleased to be supporting Islam Awareness Week with Bury Council and feel that working together on raising and understanding about the people of Bury would benefit all our communities."

And Councillor Trevor Holt, the council's lead member for community cohesion, said: "We hope initiatives like this will help foster a greater understanding of each other's histories and cultures."
